Communications and Telematic Services

OBJECTIVES

• To propose and develop middleware architectures that provide high reliability and scalability for event-based systems with multipoint communications. This will be mainly achieved by extensions to the CORBA Event Service that address the following issues
• multicast reliable communication
• event filtering and correlation
• event ordering and prioritisation
• bulk data handling

• CORBA Event Service has limitations in terms of multicasting, reliability, filtering, total ordering, and bulk data transfer.
• It is possible for CORBA Event Channels to loose events and connectivity information, which turns them inadequate for publish/subscribe environments.
• The development of process control, trading, telecommunication and collaboration applications will benefit from a reliable multicasting Event service capable of handling large quantities of data.

• Project activities will be mainly based on prototyping and testing.
• Prototype implementations will take place in the project testbed, which is made up suppliers and consumers in a LAN/WAN environment.
• The extensions to the CORBA Event Service will be explored in a multimedia conference system (CONCHA) developed for the purpose of the project.

• Reliable multicasting extensions to the CORBA Event Service, fully compatible with the standard service.
• Scalable and efficient platform for conference systems, based on ITU T.120 recommendations, using the developed CORBA extensions.
• Evaluation of existing ORBs in terms of performance and scalability.
