Nuno Lourenço

Associate Professor 🏫 University of Coimbra

Nuno Lourenço is an Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics Engineering of the University of Coimbra, where he earned his Ph.D. in Information Science and Technology in 2016. He has been a member of the Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (CISUC) since 2009 and currently coordinates the Bio-Inspired Artificial Intelligence (bAI) research group. He previously served as a Senior Research Officer at the University of Essex, United Kingdom.

His research focuses on bio-inspired algorithms, optimisation, and machine learning, with recent work exploring energy-efficient neuroevolution, sexual selection, and evolutionary machine learning. He is one of the main contributors to Structured Grammatical Evolution and Probabilistic Grammatical Evolution, and co-designed DENSER, a framework for the automatic design of deep neural networks using evolutionary computation.

He frequently collaborates with industry through national and international research projects, contributing to applied innovation in areas such as space systems, health technologies, and automated machine learning. He has supervised three Ph.D. students and is actively involved in postgraduate education.

Nuno Lourenço is actively involved in the Evolutionary Computation community, serving as Program Chair of EuroGP in 2020 and 2021, and as Publication Chair for PPSN 2018 and EuroGP 2019. He is a member of the Programme Committees of major conferences such as GECCO, PPSN, and EuroGP, a Steering Committee member of EuroGP, and an Executive Board member of the SPECIES Society.

He has authored or co-authored over several peer-reviewed publications in leading journals and conferences in Evolutionary Computation and Artificial Intelligence, and has participated as a researcher in 13 national and international research projects.
