When his brother gets seriously sick, he decides to put away their differences and visit him after many, many years. So, alone, he begins a long journey through hundreds of miles, just to see again his brother, even if it's the last thing he will ever do... Based on a real story. Summary written by Chris Makrozahopoulos {makzax@hotmail.com} Comment: "The Straight Story" is based on Alvin Straight who, at the age of 73 and in ill-health, made the 265-mile trip from Laurens, Iowa to Mt. Zion, Wisc. on a John Deere riding mower, albiet with the need for repairs along the way. It took him 5 weeks to make the first 200 miles! Along the way he encountered some interesting people that produced some heartwarming dialog. The meeting of the two brothers after 10 years' of not speaking is a fine finale. Farnsworth as Straight does such a remarkable job that he really "becomes" Straight. But, how do you place a film like this among other films based on "a real story?" Films that come to mind are "Nixon", "Longitude", "Music of the Heart", "Apollo 13", "Man on the Moon", just to name a few. To me, all of these films are wonderful, and also are much more significant, are better-filmed, and are overall more enjoyable to watch. Currently "Straight Story" is rated #78 on the IMdb all-time list, ahead of such favorites as "The Graduate(67)", "October Sky(99)", "Forrest Gump(94)", Dead Man Walking(95), "Back to the Future(85)", "Bonny and Clyde(67)", and "E.T.(82)", to name a few. I don't believe it belongs there. I rate "The Straight Story" as a very high 7, or a low 8, on a 1 to 10 scale. It is a good film, but has been over-hyped to a considerable extent.
