Edmundo
Monteiro is Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Department of Informatics Engineering (DEI) of the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal. He graduated in Electrical Engineering
(Informatics Specialty) from the University of Coimbra in 1984, and received
his PhD in Informatics Engineering (Computer Networks) and the Habilitation
from the same university in 1996 and 2007 respectively.
He is the Coordinator of the Laboratory of Communications and Telematics of the University
of Coimbra. He has more than 25 years of research and industry experience in
the field of Computer Networks, New Architectures and Protocols, Quality of
Service and Quality of Experience, Routing and Resource Management, New Network
Management Paradigms, Network Security, and Wireless Networks and Protocols.
He was the Director of the
Laboratory of Informatics and Systems of the Pedro Nunes
Institute (IPN) from 1997 to 2001. At IPN he was involved in consultancy,
technology transfer and in the promotion of start-up companies. He is still
actively involved in two start-up companies (Flor de Utopia and LoftPower) and in
consultancy activities in the field of Communication Systems for large
companies and public institutions.
He participated in many
Portuguese and European research projects and initiatives such as RARE (Reseaux

Services), E-NET (European FP5 NoE - Emerging Networking Technologies), E-NEXT

(European FP6 SSA - Open Interconnect for the Internet Community), WEIRD (European FP6 IP - WiMAX Extensions
to Isolated Research Data networks), MICIE
(European FP7 STREP - Tool for systemic risk analysis and secure mediation of
data ex-changed across linked CI information infrastructure), GINSENG (European FP7 STREP - Performance
Control in Wireless Sensor Networks), and COST IC0906 (WiNeMO - Wireless
Networking of Moving Objects.
His publications include 6
books, several book chapters and journal publications, and over 200 papers in
national and international refereed conferences. He is also co-author of 9
international patents. He is member of the Editorial Board of several journals
and involved in the organization of many national and international conferences
and workshops (QofIS2001,
MIPS2003, WCM-WCC2004, WQoSR2004, Networking2006,
INFOCOM2006, WWIC2007, Networking2008, BWA 2008, 2009 and 2010, and ACM SAC NETS 2008, 2009
and 2010).
He regularly acts has expert
evaluator and reviewer for European Commission and national organizations in
Portugal, Switzerland, Scotland, Belgium (Flandres), Cyprus, Estonia, Russia
and Latin America, in the areas of Telecommunications Networks, Information
Systems Technologies, Technology Transfer and SMEs, and Human Resources and
Mobility.
Edmundo Monteiro is member of Ordem dos Engenheiros (the Portuguese
Engineering Association), IEEE Communication
Society, IEEE Computer Society, and ACM SIGCOMM, and the Portuguese representative
in IFIP TC6
(Communication Systems)
